Benefiting from the Sounds in Our Lives

By

Francine Milford

All around us are forces of energy. The air we breathe, the water we drink, and the foods we eat are all forces of energy. So, too, are the sounds we hear.

A bird sings, a frog croaks, a bell rings…all these sounds and more elicit a specific response in our minds. Whether we are aware of it or not we are subconsciously taking note and filing away information about the world around us.

In our daily lives, we are inundated with a variety of sounds. For the most part, we have trained ourselves to filter out the “noise” of day to day living in a modern society.

A case in point, how many passing cars do you now single out and count in a day? For the most part you have only made yourself aware that there are passing cars and never give them another notice unless something unexpected happens, such as a crash.

This is the world we live in, the world of sound communication.

The study of sound includes knowledge of sound waves, tones, overtones and harmonics. Science has discovered that sound waves can pass through objects such as air, metal and water. With our bodies made up of more than 75% water, humans become a wonderful conduit through which sound can travel and by doing so, these waves can be used to affect the many systems of the physical body.

We can use this knowledge of sound passing through objects and apply them to the use of sound on our own bodies. Because our bodies are solid, sound waves can pass through the skin, organs, tissues-right down to the very cells of our bodies. Sounds can also be used to enhance the nutrition of food and water and be used to remove negative and stagnant energy in a room.

There have been some remarkable studies on how various cells, especially cancer cells, respond to sound waves. We are just beginning to research and understand how sound waves can be used to help heal our body, mind, and spirit. As more practitioners begin incorporating tuning forks, music, singing bowls, chanting and toning into their practices, more information will be developed and shared in this exciting field.

While humans can benefit from a sound therapy session, pets and plants can also reap rewards from a session. Pets often imitate and mirror many of the problems that their owners may have and may benefit from a sound session in much the same way that their owners would.

If using tuning forks, the vibrations of the tuning fork can be just as effective as the sound one hears during the session. In this way, even deaf people can "feel" the sensations and vibrations in their bodies.

Some of the benefits of using the right sounds in your life include better sleep, lower blood pressure, increase circulation, ease tension and stress, aid digestion, relieve respiratory problems, and helps to clear the head.

Listed below is a simple exercise you can follow to ‘tone’ and clear the major chakras of your body:

Begin by sitting or lying in a comfortable position and close your eyes. Take a long, slow breath in and as you exhale, release all stress that you may be holding in your body.

Bring your mind to your Root Chakra, located at the base of your spine. Take a deep breath in and as you exhale, hum or say aloud, “Do” (pronounced DOE). Repeat for an additional two more times completing three breaths in and out, toning at each exhalation.

Move up the scale bringing your focus to your Sacral Chakra located just below your navel, and breathe in. As you exhale hum or say aloud “Re” (pronounced ray). Continue two more times for a total of three complete breaths in and out.

Bring your mind to your Solar Plexus area located 2” above your navel, and breathe in. As you exhale, hum or say aloud, “Mi” (pronounced me). Continue two more times for a total of three breaths in and out.

Bring your attention to your Heart Chakra located in the middle of your chest, and breathe in. As you exhale, hum or say aloud “Fa.” Continue two more times for a total of three breaths in and out.

Move up to your Throat Chakra located at the base of your throat, and breathe in. As you exhale, hum or say aloud the word, “So.” Continue two more times for a total of three breaths in and out.

Bring your mind to the middle of your forehead, the Brow Chakra, and take a slow deep breath in and as you exhale, hum or say aloud the word, “La.” Continue two more times for a total of three breaths in and out.

Focus your mind at your Crown Chakra located at the top of your head. Take a deep breath in and as you exhale, hum or say aloud the word, “Ti” (pronounced Tea). Continue two more times for a total of three breaths in and out.

Bring your mind to your Soul Star Chakra located about one foot above the top of your head. Take a deep breath in and as you exhale, hum or say aloud the word, “Doe.” Continue for two more breaths in and two more exhalations.

When finished, take a slow, deep breath in and as you exhale, hum or say out loud the word, “OM.”  Imagine feeling the sound vibrate through your whole body from the top of your head down to the bottom of your feet. Feel yourself becoming much grounded in this wonderful sound. Repeat two more times for a total of three breaths in and out. When finished open your eyes and begin your day balanced and at peace.
